A quick note for readers:

Expats in any country speak their own lingo. In the case of native English speakers living in Japan, most sprinkle their English with a collection of convenient Japanese words and phrases. In this book, we have not only preserved that element, but have chosen to not italicize any deviations from English. They are in the text as they so often appear in real life speech: simply another word.

Japanese vowel pronunciation is as follows:

A: ah as in wasabi

E: ae as in anime

I: ee as in sushi

O: oh as in Tokyo

U: oo as in udon
